“Fine gardening is a specialized service…set apart from the service provided by a typical maintenance crew.”
~ Jim Huston, J.R. Huston Consulting
Owner, Certified Professional Horticulturist (CPH)
Steven manages all areas of the field for Gardens Remembered LLC. Being the owner, he balances efficiency with attention to detail, gradually developing the layers of complexity in the gardens he maintains. He is a man of integrity, honest and loyal, and places high value on client relationships and providing excellent service.
Learning landscaping from the ground up, Steve worked for the award winning Chapel Valley Landscape Company, working his was from crewman up to a field manager in charge of multiple crews. In addition, Steven’s spare time was spent maintaining and building a name for himself as a high-end Residential Gardener, fine tuning his skills and providing broad spectrum care to many elite clients provided to him by well-known landscape architects.
It was during his time as Field Manager with Chapel Valley that he received an Environmental Landscape Award from the Landscape Contractors Association for overseeing the landscape installation at Merrywood Estates in McLean, VA. Steven was later asked to join the elite gardening team of Merrywood Estates as their Head Gardener, supervising the additional gardening staff. As Field Manager, he acted as Safety Committee Chairman for several years.
It is at Merrywood that he found his true love, Estate Gardening, and realized that many high-end professionals needed a more detailed approach to their gardening needs. Having already established himself as a Professional Estate Gardener not only at Merrywood Estates, but with his own active client base in Northwest D.C., Steven and his wife of many years, Gabrielle, decided they had what it takes to start their own business. With additional referrals from DCA Landscape Architects, it wasn’t long before Gardens Remembered was able to make a name for themselves, and continues to do so today.
As an active member and past Vice President for Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) DC Branch, he gives seminars on container gardening to fellow members, and continues to go to monthly meetings focused on current landscaping trends and site specifications.
Business Manager, Certified Fine Gardening Professional
Gabrielle manages all aspects of the business other than Field Operations, and maintains and designs the display gardens for their home-based business, lovingly refered to a Hornicopia.
Gabrielle’s love of gardening began as a secretary for the landscaping division of Metzlier’s Garden Center in Columbia, MD. where she met her soon to be husband, Steven Horn. Intuitive and creative, Gabrielle supplemented what comes naturally to her by taking a landscape and floral design curriculum at local colleges, furthering her knowledge working on site with Steven in the field.
After working in the field for seven years, along with maintaining the business operations, Gabrielle now focuses her time solely on managing the business. As a Design Consultant for Gardens Remembered, Gabrielle devotes personal time and attention to each client by determining color and design preferences. She is easily reached by email or phone and enjoys maintaining a warm and personal relationship with her clients.
Gabrielle’s most recent accomplishments are being named as one of the ‘Women of the Year’ by the National Association of Professional Women, as well as receiving her Certification as a Professional Fine Gardener.
Supervisor / Designer
Ian started off as a Crew Member in the spring of 2010, and worked his way up to Foreman a couple years after that. Besides his highly competent skills in overseeing and maintaining job sites, he is a creative designer, and designs the majority of our bed and container displays.
Ian is an extraordinarily quick and skillful worker, able to handle multiple and varied tasks, and has good relations with our clients. Ian loves all aspects of working with plants, and is truly irreplaceable as a member of our team.
Adam Mills began part time on our mowing crew in the spring of 2013. His enthusiasm for learning more about detailed gardening is just what we were looking for, and has allowed us to broaden our client list even further!
Josh has been around gardening his entire life. With parents that spent much of their free time “playing in the dirt,” he learned to value the many wonders a garden has to offer, and the hard work it takes to keep it healthy and beautiful.
Growing up in a “hort” family also gave Josh added opportunities to view many beautiful gardens, and appreciate the care needed in maintaining them properly.
That is why we were thrilled when he chose to join our crew many years ago. His hard work, leadership, and attention to detail have been vital in the success of Gardens Remembered. We hope he sticks around!
Additional crew members are recruited through schools and colleges offering horticultural curricula, local trade associations, as well as those passionate about learning fine gardening skills.
